Welcome to Reception Class - a place where children learn through play, exploration, and hands-on activities. From learning to count and read, to developing fine motor skills and making new friends, we support every child to make sure they feel valued, confident, and happy.

What Curriculum do we follow?

In Reception we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum.  This is a framework that sets out the standards for learning, development, and care for children from birth to age 5. It is designed to support children in their early years and help them build the essential skills they need for school and life.

The EYFS focuses on five key areas of learning:

  1. Personal, Social, and Emotional Development – Helping children build confidence, develop relationships, and understand their feelings.
  2. Communication and Language – Encouraging children to listen, speak, and develop their vocabulary.
  3. Physical Development – Supporting children’s movement skills, coordination, and health.
  4. Literacy – Promoting early reading and writing skills.
  5. Mathematics – Introducing concepts like numbers, shapes, and simple problem-solving.

Alongside these, there is also Understanding the World (exploring the world around them) and Expressive Arts and Design (using creativity to express themselves).

How do we learn?

We play! The majority of our day is play-based, as this is how young children learn best.  The classroom is set up with opportunities for children to learn new skills and to practise the things they have learnt previously.

We also have daily adult-led sessions, where the children come together to learn.

How can you help at home?

One of the best ways you can help at home is support your child with their reading and Phonics.  Every child is given a weekly reading book or a set of sounds/words.  Please take 5-10 minutes a day to go through these with your child.

Other fun ways to help include:

  • - talking about numbers, for example, asking how many chips they have left on their plate or counting red cars that drive past.
  • - drawing and colouring pictures, encouraging children to stay in the lines.
  • - writing lists and copying words found around the house.
  • - letting children get dressed and undressed by themselves.

Things to remember:

Tuesday – PE – black bottoms, white t-shirt, black sweater

Thursday – Book Bags – reading books will be changed
